Skin lesion removal means removing a mole, wart, skin tag or other skin growth. Most skin growths (lesions) are harmless, but your doctor may recommend you have one removed if it’s causing significant problems or could be cancerous. You may want to have a lesion removed privately if it bothers you or you don’t like how it looks.
Types of skin lesion
Skin lesions are areas of skin that are growing abnormally or look different from the surrounding normal skin. Types of benign (non-cancerous) skin lesions include:
moles – small, dark-coloured growths on your skin, which mostly appear during childhood
dermatofibroma – firm, raised growths that can be brown, purple or red in colour and may develop after an insect bite or minor injury
actinic keratosis – rough, scaly patches of skin, which develop on areas exposed to the sun
seborrhoeic keratosis – grey, black or brown raised lesions that may appear on your body or scalp and are more common with age
skin tags – very common, small flesh-coloured growths forming where skin creases or gets rubbed
pyogenic granuloma – are harmless overgrowths of tiny blood vessels on the skin they are small, bright red nodules that often develop after an injury, tend to bleed easily and are often removed
warts – small, rough lumps caused by infection with the human papilloma virus (HPV)
Actinic keratoses can change into a type of skin cancer known as squamous cell carcinoma, so your doctor will usually recommend removing them. Once you have an AK lesion, or many, these growths may transform into skin cancer within a three-year period. Keratoacanthomas can look very similar to squamous cell carcinomas, so are usually removed to rule that out.
It’s important to see your GP if you notice any new changes to your skin, especially if it’s a change in the size, shape or colour of a mole.
Freezing off lesions with nitrous oxide can be used for actinic and seborrhoeic keratoses, warts,moles and skin tags. Nitrous oxide is applied to the area for around 10 seconds, using the Freezpen. A blister forms after the treatment. It dries up to form a scab, which falls off one to two weeks later (sometimes longer).
It normally takes a couple of weeks, occasionally longer, for a lesion to scab and fall off after cryotherapy. Your skin may look completely normal after this, but if you have darker skin you may notice it looks lighter or darker. This normally improves with time.

What is Cryotherapy and how it works?
The Freezpen instrument is an innovation in CryoTherapy. It emits a fine jet of nitrous oxide at -89°C, allowing your clinical practitioner to work with millimetre precision. Working in circular and criss-cross movements, the tiny cold blast destroys the affected tissue by freezing the inter-cellular fluid, forming ice shards and crystals that rupture the cell membrane, thereby destroying the cell.
The Freezpen is so accurate and practical to use, so collateral damage to healthy skin is dramatically reduced. And with its penetrating pressure, the Freezpen achieves effective results first time – with no special preparation nor follow up required.

There is a £50 non-refundable booking fee to secure the appointment which is fully redeemable against the treatment you choose to proceed with. If the outcome of the consultation is information & advice only, this booking fee will be retained as the consultation fee.
Cryotherapy is safe for all adults and children of all skin types and ethnicities. Cryotherapy is not recommended in patients with some medical conditions, however, following full medical consultation and skin examination with Gabriella Greco-Turner your suitability for treatment will be assessed.
Following Cryotherapy treatment, the area of skin may be red and slightly swollen. In the hours that follow, the skin may become darker, slightly itchy or tender. 3-4 days following Cryotherapy, the treated skin lesion may become darker and will begin to crust. The crusted skin lesion will eventually flake away in the coming weeks.
Once this lesion comes away there will be new skin in the area treated that will be pink or slightly lighter than your normal skin tone. This skin is still healing, so it is essential to apply sunblock (SPF 50+) to sun exposed areas such as the face, neck and hands until the area has repigmented to your normal skin tone and completely healed.
We advise full healing time could be up to 4-6 weeks although some smaller lesions may heal in less than 4 weeks. Healing time varies from patient to patient and is largely dependent on the skin type and the nature of the skin lesion that has been treated.
It is absolutely essential to apply sunblock (SPF 50+) to sun exposed areas such as the face, neck and hands until the area has completely healed and repigmented to your normal skin tone. Application of sunblock is essential following treatment to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin) of the area of skin treated and to ensure optimum healing.
Some lesions such as large moles and skin tags, are likely to require more than one Cryotherapy treatment. Some warts and verrucae may require 4 or more treatments. At your follow-up appointment with Gabriella Greco-Turner the results of the Cryotherapy treatment will be reviewed to assess whether a further treatment as required. Any further treatments performed at review appointments are inclusive in the price you pay at your initial appointment so there are no additional fees to pay.
The accuracy of Freezpen ensures a stress-free treatment. Some sensation may be felt as the nitrous oxide gas reaches the bottom of the lesion, however this is minimal if anything. Post treatment, there may be residual stinging which will subside.
Cryotherapy with the Freezpen is very safe and incredibly effective. It is a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure which does not require any needles or injections; infection risk is extremely low. The treatment is 100% sterile so there is no risk of cross-contamination.
